Electric Echoes

A Sonic Argument Between the River Goyt and Stockport’s Power Station by artist Maya Chowdhry

‘Electric Echoes’ – an interactive sound installation and SoundWalk by sound artist Maya Chowdhry – invites you to listen in as a conflict between the River Goyt and the former Stockport Power Station reverberates through the vast network of tunnels hidden beneath the town’s streets.

For centuries, the River Goyt fuelled Stockport’s industrial growth, powering the station while its own ecosystem was exploited. Through a sonic excavation of these underground remains, Maya invites us to listen as the river speaks back.

This sonic argument unfolds across two sites. At the first, located in the Air Raid shelters, you are invited to activate the installation – a network of industrial pipes – and listen to echoes of Stockport’s power station dominate the airwaves – sonic textures of industrial drones, electrical surges, reverberations of underground tunnels, and the discordant rhythms of the river as it was heated and contracted. At the second site, Stockport town centre, a SoundWalk guides you through the town’s post-industrial edges, above the path of the tunnels, and along the site of the former Stockport Power Station where the river and the town meet.

Composed by Maya Chowdhry with support from Stockport community members, the sound installation will be on display at the Stockport Air Raid Shelters from 20th February to 22nd March, and the accompanying SoundWalk will also be available during this period via the Echoes app. Too find out more and how to book free tickets, visit the FutureEverything website https://futureeverything.org/portfolio/entry/electric-echoes/
