‘Electric Echoes’ - An artist-led guided SoundWalk and Q&A with Maya Chowdhry

60 minute SoundWalk in Stockport followed by an artist Q&A

Join interdisciplinary artist Maya Chowdhry for a special artist-led SoundWalk through Stockport, as part of Electric Echoes – a new commission for Stockport exploring the relationship between the River Goyt and the former Stockport Power Station.

Led by Maya herself, you’ll listen to six site-specific audio pieces located across the town centre, pausing at each point to hear directly from the artist about the ideas, research, and histories embedded in each location.

Using the former site of the Stockport Power Station as inspiration, Electric Echoes explores ideas of decolonial cleaning – the practice of care, repair and re-attunement. The Power Station was demolished in 1981, but its legacy still flows through the River Goyt, from underground water tunnels to flashes of growing mycelium; its industrial past placed heavy demands on the river. Today, the site of the old Power Station exists overgrown with new life reclaiming the site.

During the SoundWalk you’ll move through the town’s post-industrial edges, on walkways where tunnels run beneath, and along the site of the former Stockport Power Station where the river and the town meet. Using your mobile phone and the Echoes app, you’ll experience immersive sound compositions created in response to each location – industrial drones, electrical surges, underground reverberations, and the shifting rhythms of the river itself.

Each composition invites you to listen into layers of time, place, and the more-than-human, offering a closer glimpse of what endures and regenerates along the waterways, and to consider listening itself as an act of care.

After the 60 minute guided walk, you’re invited to join Maya afterwards for a Q&A, where you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions about the SoundWalk, the installation, or the themes and histories explored through the piece.

FAQs and more information can be found on the Eventbrite booking page.

The SoundWalk will begin at Stockroom at 12:00 and will follow a route of approximately 1.2km within the city centre. The walk is mostly along paved pathways, though some surfaces may be uneven, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Please dress for the weather and bring waterproof clothing if needed. You’ll also need to bring your own headphones and ensure your phone is fully charged, and we kindly ask that you download the Echoes app and the SoundWalk in advance (please see the FAQs on Eventbrite for guidance).
