Open Call: Artist Commission for Salford Crescent Station

We are seeking proposals for an innovative new legacy artwork for Salford Crescent Railway Station.

Salford Crescent Railway Station is the gateway to the University of Salford and The Crescent’s evolving cultural quarter. The University of Salford Art Collection and Network Rail are looking to commission an artwork for the new third platform at the station, due to open in autumn 2026.

We are looking for an artist to create an ambitious and original artwork that reflects Salford’s rich heritage and thriving contemporary culture, and which simultaneously celebrates the former Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal that once stood at the same location.

Who can apply:

We are accepting proposals from UK based artists or collectives and are open to artistic interpretation in a variety of different media including, (but not limited to) sculpture, mural, installation, sound and digital.

What we offer:

An opportunity for the selected artist to deliver a permanent legacy artwork for the new platform at Salford Crescent Station. The budget of £20,000 is to cover artist fees, costs and expenses. The development process will be supported by University of Salford Art Collection and will include regular meetings and engagement with stakeholders.
